Comments: Ultra filtration elements from 812-101 slab press were analyzed to identify the filter deposit. The filter appearance was dark brown with tiny black shinny particles. These particles were easily lifted away from the filter. A section of the filter was cut away and sonicated with kerosene then filtered. The deposit on the filtered was then analyzed using FTIR and XRF. FTIR showed the black shinny particles are the same composition as the material that was washed from the filter. Both XRF and FTIR indicate that the deposit primarily consists of additives, wear metals and dirt.

FTIR Data for200243294

Sample 200243294 was scraped off the filter, ground in KBr and a FTIR spectrum collected. The spectrum indicates the presence of ZDDP, Carboxylic acid, Carboxylic acid salt, Amines, Sulphates, Calcium Carbonate, metal oxides and Cellulose (probably due to filter paper). XRay confirms the presence of sulphates, phosphates, calcium, zinc and other metals.
